1640.0. "Extended Distance FDDI" by GRANPA::DFAUST (Bad Things, man...) Fri Mar 24 1995 16:09

I have a customer with two sites about 30-35 miles apart, that they
would like to connect using FDDI. Our SMF profucts will only do about
half of that. Are they other solutions on the market, or a Digital
products that I don't know about that could be offered to my customer.

Any chance you could drop a gigaswitch at the halfway point? If you
could you probabbly would have done it, but I thought I'd ask.

1640.2Watch the power /loss budget, and it may goNPSS::KIRKMon Mar 27 1995 12:379
Single-mode products are more limited by the power budget (22 dB) than
by the link length. We have a good chance of working at 60 km (37 mi)
if the power budget is less than 22 dB. Than means the fiber cable
attenuation would have to be 0.33 dB/km or better, with very few
    splices and connectors.

We have run the SMF FDDI link at 67 km in our labs.

1640.3Check with "BELL" ???CIVPR1::MARKISDepends on Your Perspective, Ofcourse ...Tue Feb 13 1996 14:2218
Bell-Atlantic (telephone Company) has FDDI (Fast Packet Services - SAS or
DAS). They usually support 25Mile Radius from any Central Office. It was
$2200/month for SAS and $2700/month for DAS, about 2 years ago. It
probably has gone down since.

Keep in mind, however ("Reality"), that they guarantee "NO" minimum
Bandwidth, because this comes off a SONET (shared) Ring in the City (their
level of Pain is higher than Your's will be). But, if you have the MONEY
and need the Bandwidth (something close to 100M), it usually works (forget
their FNS - 10Mb Service, though)

If it's through the same Central Office, you can request that it be on the
same "CARD", then you "WILL" get the bandwidth, because you're not going
onto the RING ......
