1629.0. "DEFAA in internal loopback" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Sun Mar 19 1995 11:21

    A customer has a DEC7000 with a Futurebus FDDI card - DEFAA-AA (SAS)
    connected to the S Port of a Gigaswitch DEFGL-AA card. The system is
    running OpenVMS.

    Everything was running fine til VMS was shutdown on the DEC7000. On
    rebooting the FDDI controller would not come up. The system is running
    DECnet/OSI. We did a MC NCL SHOW FDDI STATION FDDI-0 Physical Port *
    ALL on the DEC7000 and found the FDDI controller is STATE OFF and it
    is in INTERNAL LOOPBACK MODE.

    The DEFAA-AA has been replaced and another FDDI port on the Gigaswitch
    has been tried and the cable has been replaced.

    A DEFAA daughter card 54-19459-01 has been ordered and we are about to
    try this soon. Somehow I do not suspect a hardware problem because
    everything was working fine till the node was shutdown. I couldn't see
    any new NCL script file created recently on the system.

    Any suggestions ?

    THE DEFAA-AA MMF PMD HAS ALSO BEEN CHANGED. SAME PROBLEM. VMS IS 6.1
    AND DECNET/OSI IS VER 5.7. WHEN DOES STATE GO INTO INTERNAL LOOPBACK ?
    IT SAYS THE NEIGHBOUR NODE IS A PORT, INSTEAD OF S PORT.

1629.2Not the system I thinkGIDDAY::STANISLAUSSun Mar 19 1995 13:169
    MC NCL SHO FDDI STATION FDDI-0 ALL shows STATUS as OFF. If I say MC NCL
    ENABLE FDDI STATION FDDI-0 the command is accepted, but when I again look
    at this STATUS it is still OFF. This customer had another DEC7000 with
    DEFAA in it and not used. So we ran NET$CONFIGURE and found out that
    the situation with this 2nd system is exactly the same. FDDI STATIOn
    is OFF and PHY PORT is in INTERNAL LOOPBACK. SO the common factor is
    the Gigaswitch. although another FGL card has been tried.

    The Gigaswitch has also been eliminated by connecting the system to a
    DC900MX. Same problem.

    With SDA and SHOW LAN/DEV=FAA the PHY STATE is INT_LOOP and the LINK
    STATE is OFF_INIT. The INIT_TIMEOUT=1.

    So we are fully convinced it is not hardare. Moreover everything was
    working fine before the shutdown and reboot. The customer says before
    the shutdown a patch was installed on the DEC7000 to fix a problem
    where if the system had large memory, then it did not write a dump file
    properly. Also the sysgen parameters relating to max process count and
    channel count were increased. According to customer nothing else was
    changed.
