1562.0. "MIgration from Thickwire to FDDI ethernet" by DPDMAI::BERNAL (We all smile at 5:00 pm) Thu Jan 26 1995 17:32
Hello we currently looking for alternatives on migrating to
fiber backbone .
We currently have one thikwire segment that is about 400 meters .
Off that segment we h4000's which feed delnis which feed decservers .
On that same segment have we our vax nodes , 2 7610's , one 7620 one
6530 and a 6420 .
Now the customer is looking at upgrading the the thickwire backbone
to a fiber base backbone .
One of the concerns is , how do you keep keep your investment and
and make it work with the the fiber backbone .
Is there a way to keep the the decservers and delnis and allow them
to connect to a fiber backbone via a fiber transciver ?
Any ideas , thoughts ,
thank you

1562.1 | FDDI or Ethernet backbone | JUMP4::JOY | Perception is reality | Fri Jan 27 1995 13:05 | 13 |
| Is the customer upgrading to fiber Ethernet or to FDDI. If to FDDI then
he can put in a DECswitch 900EF which is an FDDI to Ethernet bridge with
2 AUI connectors on it to support the connections to the DELNIs. He can
hang the DECswitches off of DECconcentrator 900s which could also have
the VAX systems hanging on them if they are a model which supports FDDI
adapters (can't remember if you said the model numbers). Otherwise the
VAX will have to plug in to a DELNI somewhere or else directly into one
of the AUI ports on the bridge. There is a multitude of configuration
options which can only be addressed if more detail is given of the
customer network and plans.
