A customer asks following two questions: 1. Does the DEFTA card support bit significant group addressing mode as defined in ISO 9314-2 Annex A.2? 2. Which conventional group addresses are reserved by DECnet and other services used by system software (OSF)? I assume the answer to first is yes but couldn't find it documented anywhere? Can someone confirm? Is files::registry/ethernet-registry-public.ps the best document to answer second question? Thanks, Stuart.

1) Yes, the DEFTA supports multicast (group) addressing. 2) This is a strange question. None are "reserved" per se though many DNA specs define multicasts. There is no limit on which group addresses may be set and so any adapter has to be able to deal with any group address. Note only that but the adapter must also be able to support setting of additional individual addresses. | |||||

I don't have a copy of the ISO document but BIT SIGNIFCANT group addresses are a code word for the brain-dead 802.5/IBM functional addresses used on Token Ring LANs not FDDI (to the best of my knowledge). The DEFTA would be able to support them if they were. -tom |
