A customer plans to have two risers and inter floor fiber he is looking for an FDDI configuration. There is a requirement for dedicated ethernet and FDDI ports on each floor. One suggested configuration is a single dual FDDI ring. Is there a way of providing interconnected multiple FDDI rings without using a GigaSwitch ? You can interconnect them all by just chaining the hubs: A B +------ ef ef mx mx ----+ | | || || | | | ----------- | | | | +--------------------+ | | | | A B | +--- ef ef mx mx ----+ | | || || | | | ----------- | | | | +--------------------+ | | | | A B | +--- ef ef mx mx ----+ | | || || | | | ----------- | | | +-----------------------+

Slight correction: Not that it's practical here, but you can also connect up to 3 FDDI rings together with the DECNIS bridge/router. Do you really need to keep 3 rings? If not, the suggestion in .-1 is fine. Also, there are several alternative "treeing" configurations you might consider. See the FDDI System Level Description for more info. -Mike P.

Thank you for the replies. As I understand the only way our competitors can connect FDDI rings is via a router, Again placing the Gigaswitch in a unique position. Dual rings vs a tree configuration ----- I have seen some tree configuations - the rules seen more complicated that using a dual ring. What is the "religion" around tree'd FDDI's ? Jim |
