1501.0. "LAT over fddi and ethernet" by HGOVC::BURANCELEUNG () Thu Nov 17 1994 10:44

Hi,

  I have a configuration as below :

                                      Terminal Servers
	    ----------------------------|------------------------ ethernet
			  |
	     +=========  DB900MX  =============+
             |                                 |
             |                                 |
             |                                 |
             |                                 |
             +=========  DC900MX ==============+
                       / |    |\
                      /  |    | \
                     /   |    |  \
                   Alphas    VAX4000
                     .         .
	    ------------------------------------------------------- Ethernet

   Alphas and VAX4000 are connected to the FDDI ring to form the FDDI
   cluster. Ethernet is used as backup purpose.

   Alphas and VAX4000 announced a LAT service through FDDI.
   Terminal servers connected to the DB900MX can then connect to
   the Alpha or VAX4000.

   Questions are :

     1/ since if DB900MX is dead, it will create single point failure.
        Is ther a way to create an backup link so that even DB900MX
        dead, the terminal servers can still connect to the host
        systems ?

     2/ from quite a number of topics here that, if the upper ethernet
        is connected to the bottom one and LAT service is announced
        out, it is not supported. When will LAT has the feature to
        failover from FDDI to ethernet ?

 Thanks,
 Burance.

    I can't answer your LAT questions, but I thought all of the DECbridges
    support spanning tree in which you could have multiple bridges spanning
    the same physical networks, but only one is performing the bridging
    function at a time. You could then provide failover by using two
    DB90MX's.
