1490.0. "FDDI boot information" by GESSUB::BAGNASCO (PAOLO) Tue Nov 08 1994 07:52

    Hi,

    I read the attached article on TIMA, saying that FDDI controller
    DEFTA is not bootable;

    a customer wants to know when this will be possible.

    Can someone give us this information?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paolo

DEFTA, OVMS, OSF, DEC3000, VAXstation 4000, model 90

Information supplied by workstation engineering:

        The DEFTA TURBOchannel FDDI controller is not supported as a boot
device on the VAX4000 and DEC3000 family of workstations.
OVMS and OSF do not have drivers for the option that are VMB loadable, the
drivers are only loaded / useable at the operating system level.

At least for OSF/1, bullshit. I load most of my Alphas via DEFTAs and it works
fine.

DEFTA can be used as a boot device for AXP only, Flamingo, Sandpiper, Pelican
in Alpha VMS V6.1 and later. Note that support is not planned for VAX. Note
that some of the faster DSR systems (Sandpiper+, Flamingo+) may be broken in
this regard - there is an outstanding QAR on it. This will be fixed for V6.2.

    Can a Sable 2100 boot over FDDI? Can/will a 7000 or 10000 ever boot via
    FDDI? Is this controller dependent, console, hardware platform,
    operating system dependent?
1490.7STAR::STOCKDALETue Dec 20 1994 14:0315
7000/10000 - Yes, via DEMFA.

3000 - Yes, via DEFTA, DEFZA.

Mikasa - Yes, via DEFEA in V6.2.

All other systems, no. To boot, first console MOP support is needed,
then a VMS bootdriver. There is no console support for any systems
other than the ones listed above. Since the bootdriver code now
exists for all FDDI adapters, the only remaining piece is console
support (and debug of the bootdriver as necessary).

    I also have DEFTA-AA Turbo Channel boot problems with a 3000-600. I
    believe the original STARS article said VMB boot code support was
    missing. My customer is very disappointed in the product. We need this
    problem fixed.

There is a bug in the bus support code which thinks a Sandpiper+ is a
Flamingo and then doesn't do the conversion of the slot number provided
by the console which numbers the slots differently for Sandpiper than for
Pelican and Flamingo. So the VMS boot driver for the DEFTA cannot
find the DEFTA and the boot fails.

Contact the VMS support group to retrofit the fix back to V6.1 if
you need it. Or wait till V6.2 where it is fixed.

    Thanks for the info. I copied down APB.EXE from V6.2 and applied it to
    my 2100 Servers. No problem booting in the Alpha 3000-600 afterward.
