1485.0. "DAS=(MACx2)?" by JAHMAN::ELLIS (Peter S. Ellis Jr. - MBAd (More & Better Ads!)) Tue Oct 25 1994 11:20

    Is there dual-MAC capability on our DAS adapters? Is this an ANSI
    specification for DAS?

    My customer tells me that other vendors' DAS adapters have dual MACs (I
    don't know whether this means that the second MAC is optional, or that
    that they have the ability to introduce a "new" station onto the
    wrapped ring. Or, is this just the way ring wrapping works in ANSI?

    No. Neither our SAS or DAS adapters support dual-MACs. In fact, I
    don't know of any Digital FDDI products that support this "feature".
    It's certainly NOT an ANSI specification that dual-attach adapters
    support dual-MAC's...or we'd be out of compliance for many years now.

    Thanks for that prompt answer, man. My customer was trying to figure
    out how he could use a pair of DAS connections between GIGAswitches
    with both links active, and this came up during the discussion.

    I'm not that familiar with all of the connection possibilities of the
    GIGAswitch, but if the DAS connections are on the dual-ring, then both
    PHYs are active. If you're dual-homing, only one is active (B) and the
    other is standby (A). Neither option is predicated on having
    dual-MACs. By the way, you may want to search for dual-MAC topics in
    this Notes conference. I'm sure this topic has come up before.

1485.4Grats, man...JAHMAN::ELLISPeter S. Ellis Jr. - MBAd (More & Better Ads!)Wed Oct 26 1994 06:284
    Thanks, Larry; I'll do just that. While I'm at it, I'll post an entry
    in SCHOOL::GIGAswitch, as well.

    for additional discussion on 2 MACs and related concepts.

        The GIGAswitch/FDDI is just like our other devices. With FGL-2
    cards, the GIGAswitch/FDDI can provide A/B/M/S ports. With FGL-4
    cards, the GIGAswitch/FDDI currently provides S port support, but will
    soon also provide M port support. None of them provide 2 MACs.

        I'm not quite sure what your customer is trying to achieve, but
    note that the GIGAswitch/FDDI provides M port support, which allows
    systems with DAS interfaces to dual home the interface to two different
    ports (on different devices, if desired). Dual homing has nothing to
    do with 2 MACs, though...
