>> Can the DEFTA work on the VAX4000-60, VMS6.1?
I believe the answer is no. DEFTA is a TURBOchannel device, which requires
a TURBOchannel Adapter (TCA). As far as I know, the TCA is not supported
in the model 60, making it impossible to fit a DEFTA in the machine.
The VAXstation4000-90 does accept the TCA, and thus the DEFTA does work in
this model.

| Oops. Even if the TCA does work in the model 60, the DEFTA does not.
DMA is not supported.

| Note that the DMA support issue is a hardware support issue, not a VMS
support issue.
Also note that since the DEFZA is also a DMA device, there are no FDDI
devices supported on the 4000-60.

| Hi,
Thanks for the replies,
I take it that the DWCTX-BX TURBOchannel Adapter module does not
support DMA, which is why the DEFTA & DEFZA cannot be used. Strange
that the PMAZ-AB SCSI adaptor works.
Will the PMAD-AB work in this case (standard ethernet)?

| The PMAX-AB and PMAD-AB don't use DMA so they work just fine.

1430.6 | TCA DOES support DMA | STAR::GAGNE | David Gagne - OSF/1 Development | Fri Aug 26 1994 09:14 | 7 |
| re .4:
The TCA does support DMA. If you use the TCA in a 4000-90, then you
can use any DMA Turbochannel controller that's supported on the
4000-90. And that includes the DEFTA and the DEFZA.
The combination of the TCA and the 4000-60 does not support DMA.
