Good reasons? No, there weren't any GOOD reasons we weren't included.
Basically, it was a number of things that caused us to miss this
opportunity. Data Communications told us that they didn't know we made
FDDI NICs for PC's and that is hard to accept given that we've been
shipping our FDDI EISA cards since January of 1993. In addition, the
employee responsible for following up on the article (it apparently was
listed in the editorial calendar) neglected to do so. It wasn't until
shortly before press time that we found out about this and Data Comm
told us it was too late. We then asked for at least a small paragraph
mentioning that Digital sells FDDI adapters, but they said no.
I realize that it is not the Field's responsibility to track editorial
calendars and follow up on these free marketing opportunities, but if I
could ask a favor it would be to please send email to Jim Colantropo
(DELNI::COLANTROPO) or Diane Burak (NETWKS::BURAK) when you come across
a future article or benchmarking test being done on FDDI adapters.
These two individuals are working closely with our Public Relations
folks to see that this doesn't happen again. However, it is clear that
there are a number of smaller networking magazines that may not be
received here at King St, so it's good to receive the additional
feedback from the Field.
There was a time when trade publications would assume that Digital "had
it" when it came to networking products and be surprised if we didn't.
Somehow that's turned around and it's actually surprising to people to
hear that we're in the PC business.
