I don't have the time to search these notes right now for existing entries..... but would welcome any quick responses to a question I have from a customer to whom we are bidding a very large network ($150m !!) Q? Is there an accepted "standard" for Ethernet-FDDI protocol translation as undertaken by our DECbridges ? My understanding is that we implement the ANSI and equivalent ISO standards for FDDI and that TRANSLATION between these LAN protocols is managed in acordance with the standards. Can this be classed as "OPEN" in nature, implemented by others ? I just need to check I'm on the right lines before responding........ Thanks in advance.... Rog

There certainly is. The relevant IEEE standards are 802.1i and 802.1h. In addition there is 802.1d, the bridge standard. (802.1i is the supplement to .1d for FDDI; 802.1h describes bridge operation for translation of Ethernet packets, including oddball things like the Appletalk workaround.) In addition there is also the Internet standard for IP over FDDI, RFC 1390. paul |
