1327.0. "meeting redundancy requirements" by 37003::BDWYER () Sun May 01 1994 17:47
A customer wishes to support 5000 dumb terminal users at a central site on
a VMS for AXP cluster running an order/entry application. About 80
muxservers/DECNIS will bring users from WAN to ethernet. The AXP cluster
will have ethernet initially, then FDDI interfaces connected to Gigaswitch.
High availability to them means redundancy or at least no single point of
failure.
DEC customer publications (FDDI primer,System Level Description) recommend
dual ring of trees and dual homing of stations to multiple concentrators.
However we don't offer a DAS controller on the larger CPU's. Multiple interfaces
(one DEMFA, one Ethernet) invite extra complications and expense.
OSI won't handle muli-circuit with very different bandwidths well.
In addition dual interfaces present problems for LAT if the LANS are bridged
together.
What FDDI configurations provide redundancy with XMI CPU's running LAT
and OSI?
