I have a customer situation where the expected performance
does not match reality, and they complain of only getting
1.1Mbytes/second for either decnet or cluster (disk to disk
copy) operations between two alpha AXP 3000-500
the SMC device below is an fddi//ethernet "fast" hub, but the
performance of interest is between the to alpha on the main fddi
ring. What the heck can we tune, if anything ?

Is the data in fact going over the FDDI and ONLY over the FDDI? 1.1 MB sounds suspiciously like the Ethernet line rate; if you're path-splitting or using just Ethernet, that's the number to expect. Unplug the Ethernet and see if things change. Second, are there any errors being counted? paul

Thanks Paul, I'll ask the customer to try this.
Meanhile, what ballpark figure for throughput should I expect ?

Alphas have demonstrated FDDI line rate transfer for some applications. Results will vary, but I would say that any reasonably straightforward data transfer application (file copy, cluster access, etc.) should be fixed if it doesn't get 50 Mb or so... paul
