1312.0. "How to load PATHWORKS over FDDI - DEFEA - EISA" by JEDI::CAUDILL (Kelly - Net Tech Support - 226-6815) Mon Apr 11 1994 11:24

Way back at PATHWORKS V5.0 field test BL7, I was able to install
PATHWORKS on a PC over the DEFEA. I just copied the driver and
protocol.ini stub off the DEFEA disk, inserted the first PATHWORKS
disk, answered the questions, and lo and behold, it started the DEFEA,
connected to my server and got the rest of PATHWORKS over the net.
Just like in the marketing literature!!

When the PATHWORKS V5.0 SSB kit came out, I needed to this again and
could not. We ended up giving up and using ethernet because we didn't
have time to solve the problem - I hate it when that happens.

It just happened again. This time with a DECpc 466d2 MTE.

First we had to get the ECO for the DEFEA mentioned somewhere in this
conference to get past some new feature of the MTE.

Then the selftests still did not work. But I tried to install
PATHWORKS anyway hoping the problem was in the diag and not the board :-)

And it still did not work. I could not load PATHWORKS over the net.
The board would start, it would connect to the server and start to work
    but then it would hang.

I finally installed PATHWORKS onto the hard disk, installed from there,
    and it works fine. Ickk!!!

I can't test it now (because the PC is already running and I don't have
time to go back) but I think the problem is that, for the DEFEA to work
(and someone else can debate whether it is the DEFEA's fault or
PATHWORKS or what), PATHWORK's SCH must be run with /NDIS. The
procedures on the SETUP disk do not do this and do not ask you.

So, if you want to install PATHWORKS onto a PC over FDDI...

Add the /NDIS qualifier to the "%2:\decnet\sch" line in the
\TOOLS\DNETSTN.TPL file on the LM setup disk.
