Is there any performance data on doing FTP transfers between two Alpha DEC 3000/500 OSF/1 systems with DEFTA FDDI adapters? My customer wishes to compare us to SGI. They want to know transfer rates, using FTP, from SCSI disk on one system to SCSI disk on the second system. I have given them the High Performance TCP/IP for OSF/1 Alpha AXP Workstation whitepaper, however it does not mention FTP performance. Thanks, Doug

You will limited by the file system and not ftp. (you can only read things off disk so fast...) | |||||

So, if the transfer rate is limited by factors such as the SCSI disk subsystem, the file size, and the UNIX file system it sounds like the only way to know the actual transfer rate is to test/benchmark it. Have we done any testing? I would like to give my customer some results if we have tested this. The customer has done a test, using FTP to send data from an Alpha OSF/1 DEC 3000/500 (with DEFTA) to a SGI workstation. The performance was not adequate. They believe it is due to the SGI system. They wanted to have an idea of Alpha to Alpha (DEFTA to DEFTA) FTP transfer rates. Data from us could help me replace some SGI systems. Thanks, Doug |
