A customer has reported a problem with four DEFEA cards he has just
received. He has installed them into his NetWare 3.12 server which
is a Compaq ProLient 4000 (486/50), 64Mb RAM. He has removed all
additional hardware but the fault stays the same. He has tried
several different types of PC's and all of the cards fail with the
following errors.

I had problems like that a few times when installing the DEFEA. Both
when I was setting up a Netware sserver and when I was just using it in
a DOS/Windows client.
For me, the problem turned out that I had set (or let default) the DMA
channel (or one of those parameters) to something that conflicted with
something else in the box. I twiddled the parameters in the EISA
config until the problem went away.

Tony,
Hi. I work in High Performance Networks on the FDDI adapters (DEFEA
more specifically). Do you have the latest driver kit (v2.3)? It's
available in a few places:
KALI::PCDRIVERS:FEAV23.ZIP;1
On gatekeeper.dec.com in /pub/DEC/FDDI/EISA/defeav23.zip
The Novell drivers haven't been updated since the V2.2 driver disk, but
we have added updated installation documentation, new EISA
configuration files, and an updated version of INSTVER.EXE.
If you're using the V2.2 files, there could be a couple of things
happening:
1. The older versions of EISA config enabled the 0K memory option
by default. Only the current DOS and OS/2 NDIS drivers support
the 0K option. The latest EISA config files
- Got rid of all 64K options (they were useless anyway)
- Added 1K memory options
- Changed the default order to 32K, 1K, 0K with the memory
ranges going from D0000,E0000,C0000. So the default memory
configuration is 32K at D0000.
2. The older version of INSTVER.EXE did not work properly when the
adapter was configured for 0K. This has been fixed in the new
release.
A table is included in A:\CONFIG\README.TXT which describes the supported
EISA configuration options for each released driver. Please use this to
determine the correct configuration for your setup.
As Kelly suggested, you're likely seeing a resource conflict of some
sort, as we have run successfully on Pentium-based COMPAQ Proliants.
