1246.0. "fddi/vmscluster question?" by DRAC::JLSOLE () Wed Feb 23 1994 10:41

	Hello,

I'd like to solve 2 doubts in the following VMSCLUSTER
	configuration:

		FDDI CONCENTRATOR?
		   ^ ^
		   ^ ^
		   ^ ^
	       DEFTA DEFTA
	       ----- -----
	      DEC3000 DEC3000 DEC3000
	        M600 M600	M300L
		 ! ! !
	T---------------------------------------------T ETHERNET

	1) Is it neccesary to use any concentrator to connect FDDI or
I can connect both FDDI adapters directly?.If I need a con-
	   centrator,which one?.

	2) The DEC3000/M300L is want to be used as a maintainer of the
cluster if one of the nodes (m600) be shutdown. Is it necessary
the FDDI adapter in the m300l,in terms of vmscluster?.

	Any help will be appreciated,

						josep lluis.

1. You can connect DAS stations directly (thus forming the "dual ring" or
   "trunk ring").

2. You can connect TWO SAS stations directly -- but only two -- this produces
   a two-station FDDI.

3. You can connect any mix of SAS and DAS using concentrators, and this is
the recommended practice for networks of any significant size.

No, VMScluster software doesn't require an FDDI adapter in the 300L -- it only
requires that all nodes in the cluster be able to talk directly to all the
other nodes in the cluster, and you've satisfied that with your configuration.

Ethernet should work just fine if the primary purpose of the 300L is to supply
a tie-breaking vote. If there's a lot of data to be transferred to/from the
300L, then FDDI would be appropriate.
