Hi, A customer is experimenting with Requested TRT (amongst others) in an FDDI-ring for some research purposes.He's using SMT and it's working fine for all stations except DECconcentrator 500 (DEFCN-AB). The DEFCN_AB has got a management module in place (DEFCN-MB),and he should (?) therby be able to change t_req by SMT. This fails,and as the DEFCN-AB has no OBM-port he has found himself stuck. Questions: What does it take to make SMT work as expected ? or What does it take to get an OBM-port on the DEFCN-AB ? Any help deeeeply appreciated !!! SMT-response from the DEFCN-AB follows: ( polling for t_req av DecConcentrator 500 from 3Com Linkbuilder 3GH :) destination 08-00-2b-32-68-b0 get remote mac 1 t-req receiving : smt frame received: destination = 08-00-02-af-3a-80 source = 08-00-2b-32-68-b0 frame class = 6 (rdf) frame type = 3 (response) version-id = 1 transaction-id = 175 station-id = 00-00-08-00-2b-32-68-b0 info. length = 72 info. field: param type = 0x0012 (reason code) param length = 4 reason = 1 (frame class not supported) param type = 0x0014 (supported versions) param length = 8 number of versions = 1 op. version index = 1 version[1] = 1 param type = 0x0013 (rejected frame beginning) param length = 48 rejected frame: 00 00 00 41 10 00 d4 4c 16 0d 10 00 40 f5 5c 01 08 02 00 01 00 05 00 af 00 00 10 00 40 f5 5c 00 00 00 00 08 20 33 00 04 00 00 00 01 61 c7 28 12 ------------- Command: send sif operation receiving: smt frame received: destination = 08-00-02-af-3a-80 source = 08-00-2b-32-68-b0 frame class = 3 (sif operation) frame type = 3 (response) version-id = 1 transaction-id = 174 station-id = 00-00-08-00-2b-32-68-b0 info. length = 256 info. field: param type = 0x0004 (message timestamp) param length = 8 timestamp = 0x000000c4284d61f0 param type = 0x0009 (mac status) param length = 40 mac index = 11 t_req = 0xfffe7a00 (7 ms) t_neg = 0xfffe7a00 (7 ms) t_max = 0xffdf0000 (173 ms) tvx_value = 0xffff8000 (2 ms) t_min = 0xffff3cb0 (4 ms) sba = 0x00000000 (0 ms) frame_ct = 1232420511 error_ct = 0 lost_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 2 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 15 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 1 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 15 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 3 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 0 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 4 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 15 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 5 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 15 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 6 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 15 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 7 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 0 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 8 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 0 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 9 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 0 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 param type = 0x000a (ler status) param length = 16 port index = 10 ler_cutoff = 8 ler_alarm = 8 ler_estimate = 0 lem_reject_ct = 0 lem_ct = 0 Thanks for reading this far , jon

Jon, The controller/backplane card contains a 20 pin connector provided for connecting an external UART card (22-00912-01), or you can use the internal UART (54-19449-01). Remove the top cover and connect either UART to the backplane connector using the cable (70-16738-01). You may want to tape over the back of the UART to insure it doesn't short out against the box, to limit access to the inside of the box drape the cable over the back of the box and replace the cover. Terminal speed will be 2400 baud, after power-up the OBM menu should come up. If the power indicator led on the box is flashing reverse the connection of the cable to the UART. We'll look into the SMT difficulty. wayne

When you say you are "using SMT" are you trying to do PMF SETs and GETs? If so, you have to have SMT 7.2 running in the DEFCN. PMF frames were optional before SMT 7.2. I'm not sure what version of firmware has 7.2 (DEFCN people can answer that.) If you are doing PMF SETs the Authorization (parameter 00 21) must be used and have the value of the SNMP community string. One comment : WHY are they using PMFs? SNMP is THE right way to manage your network. PMF SETs are still optional. Luc

SMT 7.2 is in DEFCN version 3.2 and later. |
