1205.0. "Boot VAX4100A into a CLuster via Q-Bus Contrl DEFQA" by NBOFS1::SCHALLER (BERNI) Wed Jan 12 1994 10:03

Hello FDDI Gurus

I'v the following configuration at Customer Site.
2 VAX 4100A, each with a Q-Bus Expansion Box, and in
each Q-Bus box there is a DEFQA (FDDI Q-Bus Controller)

The Customer is booting both VAXes via the ETHERNET as Satellites into
an existing VAXCluster. That work's fine.

Thus the DEFQA Controller are connected to a FDDI Ring, the Customer want's
now to boot the VAX 4100A over the DEFQA FDDI-Controller into the Cluster.

Is a boot via DEFQA possible, supported and working?
How can I booot via FDDI (DEFQA); In Console Mode there is no device seen,
like ESA0 or DKAnn. Is it FQA or somthing else!

>>> SHo device FDDI DEFQA not seen with this command

>>> Boot nnnn What's the solution?

			Thanks in advance

1205.1Console firmware support needed for FDDI bootingSSDEVO::PARRISRAID5:safety costs just 1 more diskWed Jan 12 1994 12:357
It appears that your VAX 4100A console firmware doesn't support booting from
the DEFQA. Perhaps a firmware ECO might be available or planned to get around
this. I think you'll have to talk with product management about this.

The only clue I could find in VTX PMLOC was that the product manager for the
MicroVAX 3100-90 (similar to the 4000-100) is Lisa (WRKSYS::) Schoeller, DTN
223-0206; perhaps she's the one to talk to, or might know who is.

.1 is correct - the console does not recognize the DEFQA. Without
console support, you will never be able to boot over the DEFQA.

Once there's console support, VMS can write and test their boot
    support.

I know of no plans for the system groups to write a boot driver for
the DEFQA - even for the new Q-bus systems that just came out.
