1168.0. "No subnet mask for SNMP mgmt?" by COMICS::REYNOLDS (Mad Dogs and Englishmen) Thu Dec 02 1993 11:52
Hello,
there seems to be an issue managing our FDDI kit from
HPs Openview: we do not set up an IP subnet mask, only an IP address.
I guess we get round this on say a DEFCN by ARPing for the management
station and on receiving no reply, use the configurable default
gateway address.
However, Openview seems to insist on reading a subnet mask and uses
this as a basis for mapping the DEFCN graphically. The customer
gets an error back (presumably because the DEFCN supplies a blank
field for subnetmask) and it ends up all alone on the graph!
Can anyone advise whether a) it is mandatory to store a subnet mask
when you implement MIB II (I take it this is the relevant MIB)
b) the DEFCN gets round not having a subnet mask in the way I
describe above.
If the answer is no, its not mandatory and it isn't our problem,
it soon will be when we ship Polycentre Netview since this
is basically the same as Openview!
thanks,
John Reynolds, UK CSC, Comms.
