Also posted in ALPHANOTES ------------------------- Can anyone enlighten me on our plans to get non-fiber 100Mb to the desktop - specifically in the OpenVMS AXP area ??? I have a customer who is in the gradual process of migrating their hundreds of VAXstations to hundreds of AXP VMS workstations, but they are concerned with the bandwidth limitations of 10Mb Ethernet, and can't justify the cost of pulling fiber to every desktop. I saw that we are participating in some committees to do 100Mb Ethernet, but I don't know of any firm hardware plans in this area. Thanks Arlan

Arlan, Depends on what you're looking for. Digital is participating on the Fast Ethernet committee (the one that 3Com and Grand Junction are backing), but I don't have any specifics on particular products in that space. You may want to try asking about 100Mb Ethernet in NOTED::ETHERWORKS since the EtherWORKS group will likely be involved. In our FDDI space, however, we do have a number of products coming out that support the new TP-PMD standard for running FDDI over Grade 5 UTP cable and Type I (?) STP cable. If they need something now, they might want to run the EISA-UTP card (DEFEA-UB) on a Jensen running OpenVMS. That should be an OK combination given your customer's requirements. For more specifics on our TP-PMD products, contact Sharon Oneill at DELNI::ONEILL. - Larry |
