1163.0. "DEFTA device driver?" by ATHINA::PAGE (Keep smiling) Tue Nov 30 1993 06:31

    Hi,

Does the LAN device driver kit for DEFTA running under ULTRIX4.3a
exist yet and if so is it on the network.

    thanks

You'd have have to ask Megan [RUSURE::] Gentry. [Though my V4.3A machine is
quite the DEFTA driver it's running]

The DEFTA ULTRIX Driver is in field test. We are about three months
late getting this on the street - bad EFT site selection/little or no
run time; However, it does work. I expect to ship it some time between
now and END-JAN-94. If you have a "situation" where the customer is
willing to be a field test site, please contact me directly:

Support for DEFTA in Ultrix V4.3A will be via a setldable
kit which will add the modules required. Versions earlier
than V4.3A will NOT be supported.

It has been tested on both R3000 and R4000 systems.

It is also part of the V4.4 project, so it will be part of
the base system at that time.

See .-1 for contact person if you have a situation...

Oh yes, the kit will NOT be available over the net until
it is a real, shipping product.

Where is the ULTRIX 4.3a setld kit? We don't want to upgrade to
ULTRIX 4.4.

Please, someone must know where this kit is. I've got two customers
waiting for it, and there's been no response here or from the product
manager. What's a poor consultant supposed to do?

I am the person who generated the tape and passed a copy on
to George Nielsen, who I believe is the product manager for
the DEFTAs. To get a copy of the tape, contact him. I think
	he's on DELNI::G_NIELSEN

No response there, either. Doesn't *anybody* have a clue where it can
be found? I'm getting depressed.

The C/C manager for High Performance Networks is George Hoff
(SCHOOL::HOFF). If it's really urgent, you may want to escalate it to
    him.

Or contact Larry Walker. You should be able to get prompt answers to
questions like this, or else there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

    Whoa.....

I sent mail to PJDM just this morning. There has been lots going on
in the background on finding this kit.

I've located a tape with the driver kit for Ultrix 4.3. This looks
like the only known copy. I'll load this baby up and add a pointer to
    this note.

One more note - might be a good idea to get the customer up to 4.4!

The version of if_fta.o which is on that tape has a few bugs
which weren't found until after V4.4 released. One of the
bugs caused a system hang about 6.5 hours after boot in some
circumstances. There was another bug fixed which might have
	caused a panic.

Contact the CSC for this replacement.

/sys/MIPS/BINARY/if_fta.o
CHECKSUM: 09168 195
----------------------

Patch id: ULTV44-017-1

This replacement module corrects several bugs including one
which can cause a system hang and one which could cause a
system panic. Additionally, some minor performance enhancements
have been included and code has been added to more completely
        identify the DEFTA module type.

        A kernel rebuild is required.

Re: .-1

The module was built for V4.4, but is completely compatible with
V4.3a and can be used to replace the if_fta.o module which comes
	off the kit previously mentioned.

I've tried copying ULTRIX-43A-DEFTA.TAR to ULTRIX using two methods:

dcp -i directly to ULTRIX

SPOOL COPY to a local VMS node then FTP in binary mode to ULTRIX

Either way, I get a checksum error from tar when undoing it.

Can someone please check that the file was copied correctly in the
first place?

I went on leave just as the kit became available. I'm trying to copy it, but
it's corrupt from my point of view, therefore I still haven't got the kit,
although I do have the patch.

Can someone else please copy the kit to an ULTRIX system and untar it to see if
it's brain trouble on my part, or a truly corrupt kit file.

1163.22I tried itNPSS::TAYLORThu Nov 10 1994 08:418

Copied it image mode (ftp), tar -xf ultrix-43a-defta.tar,
fails with a directory checksum error, possible filename
    /instctrl/UDTDEFTA435.inv1.

Copied it ascii no *apparent* problems extracting the files.

Having been the one who produced the tape in the first place
(but NOT responsible for distributing it), I went to check my
master tape and ... it appears someone has walked off with it.

In my 'copius' free time, I'll see if I can regenerate the
	tape... no promises...
