1139.0. "SMF spec again" by COMICS::REYNOLDS (Mad Dogs and Englishmen) Thu Nov 04 1993 12:38

    Hi,

has anyone got an update for note 289 re: single mode fibre spec?

I need to know the standard that our DECconcentrator single mode
cards follow ( I believe the actual interface is AT&T?) - and
if this or any relevant information is available on line.

If not, does anyone know the absolute (average) power output of
the SMF transmitter (in +/- dBm)?

    thanks,

    John,

I am not exactly sure what your question is. Do you want an
update on the ANSI/EIA/TIA single-mode fiber specification?
Or are you asking about the output optical power of our SMF
    	product?

The optical output power of the laser is - 8.0 dBm (min).

The status of the US standard for SMF is an ugly story. I had
a version of the specification ready for SP (final) ballot. The
specification committee had a different opinion, however, because
they finally admitted that their specification system was not
adequate. They decided to table my specification until the
system documents could be revised. That has now been done. So I
have to re-write the specification to fit the new document system,
submit it for a letter ballot (or 2, or 3, or ...), and then
for a standards proposal ballot. All optical parameters will
be the same as in the previous version.

    Dick,

thanks for your reply - I was asking two questions, one
in relation to the other. The latest on the SMF spec then is that
    there is still no standard?

I have a customer asking about our DECconcentrator SMF card option -
he is concerned with interoperability with 3rd party products.
Do you have a copy of the Digital spec for the product I could get
    hold of?

    thanks,
              John.
