I'm proposing a DEChub 900 solution... 10baseT out of 5 closet locations bridged to FDDI fiber backbone. Fiber is starred out of the facilities MDF in the computer room where the application servers will be either DAS or SAS connected right to the FDDI backbone. Looking at 900's at MDF and all five closets. Needed: Most economical Ethernet-FDDI bridge solution in each closet. Anything we quote now needs to be shipping in Jan-Feb '94 timeframe. Any suggestions? If it makes sense timing wise to quote the 6port Ethernet-FDDI bridge (WGE200?) what's the best way to connect 10baseT modules on various channels to the DECbridge 900? Is there any reason I can't take a port on a 10baseT module and cable it directly to one of the 6 WGE200 ports? Is there a config manual out there somewhere? Claude P.S. Competition is IBM... probably their label on Chipcom product. And we're building to a customer design, not one we came up with.

Try posting this note in ENGINE::HUB_MGNT, that's where most the the DEChub configs are at.

Yes, DECbridge 900, a.k.a. WGE200, is the way to go. You can plug 10BaseT stations directly into its 4 10BaseT inputs, or via a 10BaseT MAU into the two AUI inputs. In addition, you could go via the hub repeater. I'd suggest you get in touch with Jane Brechlin or Karl Pieper. paul

Just to get this clear... Am I correct in thinking that the DECbridge 900 can bridge multiple Ethernet channels via backplane "ports" in addition to the front panel ports? If so, how many Ethernet "ports" are really available?

Any and all ports (Ethernet as well as FDDI) are switchable between front and backplane. paul

Each port (6 Ethernet and 1 FDDI) can be switched to be a front panel port OR a backplane port. That is, if you are using a port over the backplane it is NOT available on the front. Luc |
