1126.0. "FCdriver versions" by COMICS::REYNOLDS (Mad Dogs and Englishmen) Mon Oct 25 1993 13:29

    Hello,

Can someone confirm the situation with FCdriver? This was the DEFZAs
driver but now there is apparently a new version for use with the
DEFTA (supplied in the DEC Lan Device Driver kit).

Can the new version be used with both the DEFTA and DEFZA - if not,
what are the consequences of say using a DEFTA with the older FCdriver?

The latest kit I can find for VMS 5.5-2 is VAXPHV05_U2055.A - is this
a different kit to the one above?

    thanks,

                John Reynolds, UK CSC, Comms.

Don't take this as gospel, but I believe the drivers are different
between the DEFZA and the DEFTA. I know that the port interface is
very different between the two cards so that making one driver to
support both would likely be more difficult to write and maintain than
    having two separate drivers.

The one driver, FCDRIVER, supports both the DEFTA and DEFZA.

There are other drivers like this, for example, ETDRIVER supports
DEBNA and DEBNI. XQDRIVER supports DEQNA, DELQA, DEQTA.

    Hmmm...learn something new everyday. Thanks.

    OK thanks.

Just one point: you need a LAN device drivers kit to use the
DEFTA - what is this kit called?

    I have a 5.5-2 kit called VAXPHV05_U2055.A containing FCdriver X-7 (5th
Oct-93) and also a VMS 6.0 kit called VAXPHV01_060.A containing
    FCdriver X-7 (14th Oct-93).

I understood that the LAN device driver kit was not installable on VMS
6.0 so I conclude that these kits contain 'DEFZA only' versions of
    FCdriver.

Can someone confirm this and if true, give me a network pointer to this
kit (or at least give me the ident of the DEFTA compatible FCdriver)?

    thanks,
              John.

John,

check out note 1101.*, it might answer your questions on the Lan Device Driver
Kit.

thanks for the pointer, Brad - this is really confusing!

What is the situation with the DEFTA then - are you supposed to
upgrade to VMS 5.5-2H4 or is this VMS kit included in the latest CDROM
in which case you can just pull the FCdriver?

To get round this problem though, is my FCdriver X-7 (5th Oct 93)
    version good for the DEFTA?
The customer only has X-7 17th March 93 - DEFZA only?

    John.

John,

I'm told you have to upgrade to 5.5-2H4, you are not suppose to just move the
driver over. Also, the upgrade kit was made special and only sent to certain
customers who required it. If you need a kit, check out the STARS article:

[OpenVMS] Which Update Or Installation Kit To Use For V5.5-2H4

Hope this helps,
Brad

    thanks Brad - I've checked out 5.5-2H4: it's a hardware upgrade
specifically for 4000 systems with DEFTA and DEFQA!

I'll check out why the customer wasn't made aware of this kit when
he bought the DEFTA (grumble.. moan...)

    cheers,
             John.
