1123.0. "DEFCN Frame Strip mode- why Bridge Strip?" by PFSVAX::MCELWEE (Opponent of Oppression) Thu Oct 21 1993 18:24

I have deleted the original Note and restated the question after
receiving MAIL suggesting that the way it was originally stated was
    misleading:

Why do DEFCNs show Bridge Strip as their frame strip mode? I would
expect this to be Source Address Match since this is not a bridge.
Nor is it a station for that matter..just curious as to why.

BTW, this is displayed via both the OBM port and management access.

1123.2Who sends Voids when?PFSVAX::MCELWEEOpponent of OppressionWed Oct 27 1993 11:278
Thanks for the pointer. I understand the function of the FCI with
respect to Void Frames issued by the Ring Purger DEFCN. What I don't
understand is why a non-purger DEFCN still shows Bridge Strip when it
does not appear to be sending Void frames as viewed via an analyzer.
Perhaps I need to monitor for Voids while communicating via SMT to the
    non-purger DEFCN?

1. The ring purger sends two void frames at every token. (I.e., if you
monitor just downstream from it, you'll see every token preceded by two
   void frames from the purger.)

2. Any station using Bridge stripping sends one void frame at the end of
each transmission (before issuing the token). If it's not transmitting
anything, you won't see any voids from such a station. Since it has to
send, at a minimum, an SMT NIF frame every few seconds, you will see a
void frame at least that often.
