Hi,
Not being an FDDI guru (understatement) I'm not sure how to proceed
with this customer problem. And assistance (or stabs in the dark!)
on this would be appreciated...

System ISUVAX is a VAX 4000-500 running VMS V5.5-2 in a VAXcluster.
Subject: (PR3) FDDI crash
On September 21, 1993, at about 09:24, we had some sort of event on one
of our FDDI rings that caused about half of our 240's to stop talking
to their FDDI interfaces. We were unable to restart the fza0 interface
using ifconfig, so the affected systems were rebooted. We would like to
understand what was happening on the FDDI ring at that time.
The ring looks something like this:

Where LB = Cisco 7000 w/2 FDDI and 18 ethernets
DC = Cisco AGS+/3 w/1 FDDI and 18 ethernets
WC = DEC FDDI concentrator 500
FS = DECstation 5000/240 running Ultrix 4.2a w/DEFZA controller
The Cisco 7000 crashed at this time, apparently due to an ethernet board
swap, and apparently did something to the ring that the 240's did not
like. Some of them survived and about 5 of the 10 completely stopped
talking to the FDDI.
Below you will find extracts from some of the systems involved.
First there are some uerf reports from three systems that survived the
event. Below that you will find the output from some of the 240's of the
command: "/usr/ucb/netstat -I fza0 -s". Please note that the netstat
statistics were gathered some 16 days after the event, so may be only
marginally useful.

| Node FS-9 has the worst looking counters (Ring Inits Initiated and
Beacons), so it's connections/ hardware may be failing.
Also, counters from the DEFCNs and a map of the ring showing
neighbor addresses may be useful.
