1118.0. "NIF timer for Upstream Neighbor?" by PFSVAX::MCELWEE (Opponent of Oppression) Tue Oct 19 1993 01:40

Is there any timer which expires if an upsteam neighbor station
does not send a NIF at least every 30 seconds?

Will the downstream station begin claiming if this happens?

Where can more detail on this be obtained?

    	Using POLYCENTER ELM AM -

MCC> SHOW CONCENTRATOR/BRIDGE name LINE * UNA TIMED OUT

The NIF protocol is described in detail in section 8.2 of the SMT
    	spec rev 7.2.

A NIF timeout will be reflected in the station status you can see via network management.
It does NOT cause claim or any other recovery action.

(SMT frames are not actually necessary for FDDI to work. If all SMT frames suddenly
disappeared from the face of the earth, no FDDI user would notice, and most network
managers wouldn't either!)
