Hello, Has any one had any dealings with the DECconcentrator 500 ( Multimode option ) and an Optical Data Systems 384 FDDI single mode optical converter? I have been trying to get these options working together but keep getting line state chages from idle to noisy and visa versa, along with frame format and frame check errors. The concentrator also fails it's link confidence check every couple of seconds. I have converted the concentrator with the single mode management card and every thing works OK, ie. not using the ODS boxes. I have also spoken to ODS in the UK who told me that this was a known problem within DEC and our equipment was to blame, however I can find no information about this. Any ideas? Who do I talk to? Thanks, Dave

I'd recommend staying away from that sort of stuff. It isn't part of the FDDI standard, and you're going to have fewer headaches with real single-mode ports. paul

Thanks for the recommendation, but I've already worked that one out. The fact is that the customer has bought these little boxes, the supplier has assured him that they are compatible, they also say this is a problem of our (DEC's) making and we are working on it. I guess what I am after is for someone to either say yes it is a known problem or no it's not anything to do with us, go forth and multiply! Thanks for your interest, Dave

To my knowledge there are no known problems with the DECconcentrator 500 operating with a FDDI compliant link whether it be single mode or multimode. I specifically haven't heard anything about ODS. I haven't heard whether anyone has tried ODS's single mode box with the DECconcentrator 500. How long is the optical link that is being driven? It could be a case where the laser transmitter's output power in the ODS box is to high for the length of fiber or it could not be powerful enough for the length of fiber. If it is not one of these problems than chances are it is a problem with the ODS box. I'd be willing to bet on that especially since it works OK with the DEC single mode option. Bruce. |
