1071.0. "DB620 and Spanning Tree Question" by DPDMAI::DAVIES (Mark, SCA Area Network Consultant) Tue Aug 24 1993 14:40

My customer wants to have the following configuration. We have
questions about how Spanning Tree will react to it.

    		      A B
    FDDI +---------------+ +---------------+
    ==========| DECbridge 620 |============| DECbridge 620 |===========
    	      +---+---+---+---+ +---+---+---+---+
    	          | | | | | |
    	          | | | Ethernet #1 | | |
    		  | | -+--------------------+- | |
    		  | | | |
    		  | | Ethernet #2 | |
    		  | -+----------------------------+- |
    		  | |
    Ethernet #3 | | Ethernet #4
    --------------+- -+------------

In this configuration, DB620 'A' is the primary linkage to the FDDI
    ring for Ethernets 1 & 2. DB620 'B' is the backup. Ethernets 3 and 4
    are always live.

Ethernets 1 & 2 need to have backup connections to the FDDI ring
because their life blood application lives on a system connected to it.

Ethernets 3 & 4 can live and be productive if the connection to the FDDI
ring goes away for a while.

    Our question is:

    "Is this a valid configuration?"

Another way to ask this is, " Is Spanning Tree on the DB620 implemented
on a per port basis (3 ethernets and 1 FDDI all separate) or by the
single unit itself (any port breaks and the whole units goes into
    backup)?

    Thanks for any help,

    Mark

ST is implemented on a per port basis. The Bridge & Extended LANs guide
has some examples using multiport bridges.
1071.2Where would I find it?DPDMAI::DAVIESMark, SCA Area Network ConsultantTue Aug 24 1993 17:169
Where would I get the Bridge and Extended LANs guide? Is it part of
    the DB620 manual set?

    Is it on the network?

    Thanks again,

The part number for the Bridge and Extended LAN Reference guide is
    EK-DEBAM-HR.

It doesn't ship with any of the bridges; it has to be ordered
separately. Unfortunately, I don't have a network pointer for it
    either.

That will work, but it is a wast of Ethernet ports. You can only have
one active path at any time. Also, the DB620's would still be a single
point of failure. Maybe a LANbridge 200 between the two separate
segments would be the best way to provide backup.
