1064.0. "MFA-0 counters max out at 4294967294 ???" by CSC32::D_GARZANITI (Set the WAYBACK machine to ...) Tue Aug 17 1993 13:19

Hello,

I have a customer who has indicated that he sees the counters on the MFA-0
suddenly max out at 4294967294 for no apparent reason.

Specifically he has indicated that the counters RING INITIALIZATION
INITIATED and MAXIMUM ERROR COUNT will suddenly jump to 4294967294, at the
same time that this occurs he indicates that other equipment on his ring
perceive no problems.

The customer is running VMS v5.5-2 and the FXDRIVER X-22 with a link date
and time of 17-MAR-1993.

Has anyone else experienced this problem ?

Any hints or pointers are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

1064.132 bit counter?SCHOOL::WASHABAUGHBorn to be MildTue Aug 17 1993 17:515
If you convert 4294967294 to hexadecimal, you get 0xFFFFFFFE, which is about
as large as a longword would hold. Therefore I would presume they implemented
32 bit counters rather than 64 bit counters.

    Doug, we support 64 bit counters, but Phase IV will only accept 32 bit
    counters. So that's what we pass to DECnet-VAX. We pass 64 bit
    counters (as called for) to DECnet/OSI.
1064.3Ok ... but why is this happening ?CSC32::D_GARZANITISet the WAYBACK machine to ...Wed Aug 18 1993 12:1419
Thanks Doug and Dave for the quick response.

I'm sorry that I didn't make my question clear.

The issue here is not at what point the counters max out but the fact that the
RING INITIALIZATION INITIATED and MAXIMUM ERROR COUNT counters suddenly jump
to the maximum value for no apparent reason.

Once again the customer indicates that when these counters jump to the
maximum value, other equipment on his ring perceive no problems.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced a problem with the counters
being logged correctly.

Ideas ???

Thanks again,

    Those counters come from the device. The driver just passes them from
    the device to NCP. So the question is for the DEMFA. Maureen
    SASE::JEAN supports the DEMFA. I'll send the initial note to her.
