1054.0. "Migration from DEFZA to DEFTA" by DELNI::ONEILL () Mon Aug 09 1993 20:10

Subj:	A, U: LAN: DEC FDDIcontroller for TURBOchannel based systems

Dear Network Partners,

The DEFZA-AA has been put on maintenance. This is due to a component shortfall.
Since there is limited quantity of DEFZAs, we need your help in getting
customers to migrate to the new DEC FDDIcontroller/TURBOchannel (DEFEA-FA).
OpenVMS AXP and DEC OSF/1 Alpha supports the DEFTA-FA. The VAXstation
4000 Model 90 will be supported end of July with the LAN Device Driver Kit.

The systems at risk for support are the DECstation/ULTRIX systems.
A layered driver is planned at the end of Q1. The goal is to get
the customers with Alpha and Vax workstations to migrate to DEFTA-FA ASAP.
This frees up the existing inventory for DECstations/UTLRIX support.

Realize that there is no replacement of the DEFZA-CA (STP or Thinwire) and
that it continues to ship.

I have put together some guidelines for the field to help understand what
is supported and when:

The following briefly describes DEFZA and DEFTA systems support:

	   FDDI System Operating System
	DEFZA-AA/CA DECstation 5000 Family	ULTRIX v4.2
	              VS4000/90 OpenVMS V5.5-2
DEC 3000 AXP Family	OpenVMS AXP v1.0
DEC 3000 AXP Family	DEC OSF/1 for Alpha v1.0

DEFTA-FA DEC 3000 AXP Family	OpenVMS AXP v1.5
DEC 3000 AXP Family	DEC OSF/1 for Alpha v1.2
VS4000/90 DEC LAN Device Driver Kit V1.0
for use with OpenVMS V5.5-2 ONLY
						(SSB release scheduled 7/26)**
DECstation 5000 Family ULTRIX LAN Device Driver Kit V1.0
for use with ULTRIX 4.3a ONLY
						(SSB submission is tentatively scheduled
						for September)

** Please note that the DEC LAN Device Driver Kit will NOT work with
OpenVMS VAX V6.0. The VS4000/90 group has decided to pre-install
V6.0 in the near future. For the short term it is not a problem
since V5.5-2 is still shipping. But this may need to be articulated
	   to the customer.

Rules for migrating to DEFTA from DEFZA:

All Alpha Workstations DEC 3000 AXP systems - Flamingo, Sandpiper,
		Pelican) with
		- OpenVMS AXP V1.5
			or
		-DEC OSF/1 for Alpha V1.2
(for earlier versions of these operating systems DEFZA only
		is supported)
All VAXstation 4000 Model 90 systems with OpenVMS V5.5-2
However since the DEC LAN Device Driver kit is not available
today, customer needs to wait until end of july for the
software to run the adapter. Note OpenVMS VAX V6.0
does NOT support this product. Since there are performance
		problems with DEFZA
No replacement for DEFZA-CA - this is the only copper variant
available to customer and is still available at this time
		for ordering

Driver availablility (ULTRIX Device Driver Kit) for DECstation 5000 systems
running ULTRIX 4.3a is planned for September.

DEFZA-AA DEC FDDIcontroller 700 7/8/93 10/8/93 (1)

NOTES:
(1) The DEC FDDIcontroller 700 (DEFZA-AA) is retired and is replaced by
    the DEC FDDIcontroller/TURBOchannel (DEFTA-FA). The DEFTA-FA supplies
the same form, fit and functionality as the DEFZA-AA but with
improved performance for the same price. It is a multimode fiber,
single attachment station FDDIcontroller for TURBOchannel based
workstations. DEFTA-FA is supported on DEC 3000 AXP workstations
with DEC OSF/1 for Alpha Version 1.2 and OpenVMS AXP Version 1.5.
VAXstation 4000/90 workstation support with the DEC LAN Device Driver
Version 1.0 (QA-0PAAA-H5/HM) and OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 is scheduled
for July 26, 1993 release. ULTRIX/DECstation support is planned
for September release with ULTRIX 4.3a and a driver kit (to be announced).
The DEC FDDIcontroller 700-C (DEFZA-CA) continues to ship.

Is the driver for VS4000-90 shipping ? My customer has had 6 or so on order
for a while and are wondering when the DEFTAs and the driver kit will ship.

Also when will v6.0 support the DEFTA and how will a customer migrate to v6.0?
