1043.0. "What is FFOL?" by HITIT::KAYI () Fri Jul 30 1993 09:57

Is there such a thing as FFOL (FDDI Follow On line) from IBM...620Mbps (as
claimed by a customer). If it exists, where can we get info on this.

Thanks,

Fusun

In July 93 Data Communications p53...

The article is talking about Multimedia and the potential for Asynchronous
and Synchronous FDDI and FDDI II as counters to the likes of ATM.

"The ANSI committee that developed the original FDDI spec is now working on
a gigabit-speed version of FDDI called FFOL (FDDI Follow On LAN). Although
FFOL undoubtedly is years away from completion, its drawing-board existance
may make it harder for the emerging options to succeed. This is especially
true for FDDI II, which despite its name is completely incompatible with
installed FDDI gear and will require users to invest in new equipment."

"FFOL will define an ultra high speed fibre (or fiber even) network to
handle isochronous and asynchronous traffic simultaneously. No firm decision
has yet been made on exactly how fast FFOL will run, although speeds in
excess of 2 Gbps are being considered."

So, FFOL sounds like what various vendors are trying to do with ethernet @
   100Mbps....

I believe FFOL is dead; higher speed work is being done in ATM.
