1036.0. "TP-FDDI/FDX/CAT 3 CABLES?" by ZPOVC::RAMARAJ () Mon Jul 26 1993 10:35

The proposed TP-FDDI, can it run on Cat 3 cables or only on Cat 5
    cables.

Can FDX still be handled on TP-FDDI or is it only for Fiber based FDDI?

The FULL DUPLEX mode does it involve any change to the silicon on
adapters or is it just a matter of downline loading a new firmware to
    FDDI aapters?

How many vendors have licensed the FDX mode so far? Are we going to be
seen as proprietary and shut out?

Full-Duplex Mode (FDX) is handled entirely by the Motorola FDDI chips
and Digital's SMT implementation. So it will work fine on Fiber or
    Copper based FDDI solutions.

My understanding is that the Motorola chips that we've been using for a
long time has had FDX technology built-in. It's only recently that the
CNS code (our SMT implementation) has added the functionality.
Depending on the particular FDDI product, it's likely you'll only need
to upgrade the firmware to take advantage of FDX.

Couldn't tell you, but I believe that Digital will license the
technology (code) to other vendors that happen to use the Motorola
    chips.

Even if people think of full duplex as proprietary, that shouldn't shut us out.
If they don't like it, they don't have to use it! It is there if you want it,
but if you don't want it you just leave it turned off.

The TP-DDI standard work is for category 5. Category 3 is a separate (long term)
project.
