Hello, I'm having a problem at a customer's site with the IP adress setting on a decbridge 610. (DEFEB-TB software V1.2) Documentation says DECMCC (Not available) or via the Bootp mechanism. When you power up the bridge it is suppose to send a multicast message to address FF FF FF FF FF FF with a bootP request every 64 seconds. A set up of an Unixserver can then response to the request with an IP address. It will not be saved in NVRAM but be loaded every time on power up. So far so clear.........but it won't. The customer has connected a 'Sniffer' to the network and is measuring for destination FFFFFFFFFFFF and/or source Ethernet address of port 2. (THe FDDI port is not connected, only a loopback connector) We don't see any multicast from the bridge only one DecMOP and one Decbridge mgmt. We looked for 10 minutes. The other 2 NI ports also have a loopback. Then we did a factory reset with switch 2 so an eventally stored IP would be cleared, but it made no difference. We looked at the other ports 3 and 4. Nothing seen there also. I had a new AP2 module with me: tried this one. No succes either. Also set switch 3,4,5,6 for mgmnt acces this doesn't help either. So my questions are: Do you need the FDDI port (port 1) to load the IP address ? Is it possible to enable/disable the BootP mechanism ? Can we do a ping test to the ethernet address in stead of the not set IP address (don't think so) How can we set the IP address ??????? Any help would be appreciated, Erik Haans

No, it will send the broadcast out all active ports. >> Is it possible to enable/disable the BootP >> mechanism ? It is only enabled when the IP Address is zero on power up. Setting the IP Address to a non-zero value cancels the bootp requests. >> Can we do a ping test to the ethernet address >> in stead of the not set IP address (don't think so) No. Everything you did seems to be Kosher. You should definitely see a broadcast message once per minute. The source address might be the port 1 mac address, can't remember, but it doesn't really matter. Did you verify that your NI port is active (green LED) and in forwarding mode (yellow LED)? Can't think of anything else. Dave
1029.2 | It works !! | HLFS00::HAANS_E | C-YA AGAIN ... ON MY WAY BACK | Tue Jul 20 1993 10:35 | 13 |
Thanks for the answers. The problem is solved: The bridge is doing the request only for the first Ethernet address, this is the address from the FDDI port. The decbridge FDDI module didn't have it's loopback connector placed first, so the fddi didn't pass self test and I think it doesn't forward his ethernet address then. We then plugged in the loopback connector and where looking at the port 2 E-address..... wrong. So every thing is fine now, Erik.
1029.3 | bootp requests on DECbridge 600 | MUNICH::HILGER | Fri Sep 24 1993 08:56 | 7
I have been informed by a customer, that the DECbridge 600, which does not have an FDDI board, rather it has a dummy FDDI board, does not send the bootp request on any ethernet port. Can someone verify this ? Firmware 1.3 is installed Thanks Peter |
