1006.0. "Copper FDDI Standard Update" by LEVERS::B_CRONIN () Thu Jul 01 1993 10:36
Here's the update on this month's TP-PMD standard's meeting
There has been significant progress in the last two months.
The committee has agreed on the scrambler details, most
of the receiver and transmitter specs, and the outline of
the remaining work. We are down to the final details at this
point. Tedium prevails.
Also, independent work, outside of the committee's control, by
many vendors, has seen interoperability demonstrations of products
based on the draft standard. There will be another such demo at
Interop in August. The demo will be based on Rev 1.0 of the draft
standard, which is the revision produced at the June TP-PMD committee
meeting. Digital has been, and will continue to be part of these demos.
The committee is working on a schedule that would finish the development
work in October, and then request ballot at the December X3T9.5 (FDDI
committee) meeting. The letter ballot would be conducted during
December/January, and we would start the comment resolution in February.
If that goes well, we forward for a 4 month public review, at which
time the document is published, but subject to revision if someone
finds something to complain about. After this period there is
additional review for procedural correctness prior to publication as
a standard.
If asked about when the standard is approved, the proper answer is
that it is not a standard until it is approved by the Board of
Standards Review - that occurs about 6 months after we resolve the
comments, if any, from public review.
