One of my customers has read in the V2 FDDI Primer that there are vendors selling kit that enables voice to be transmitted oevr FDDI. What he wants to do is to run digitised voice, from telephone type equipment, over an FDDI network. What exists today that will enable him to do this. Cheers Phil

I looked quickly, and the only reference i saw to voice was on page 180. That paragraph referred (without naming it) to DECSpin, which was available at the time that the book was published. DECspin was a conferencing application that initially ran on FDDI. In general, FDDI is not intended to be used as a backbone for delivery of voice traffic (e.g., as a backbone for PBX traffic.) It may be useful if they have a dedicated application, and understand how to use FDDI as a high speed pipe. But, if they need the usualy voice service guarantees, FDDI may not work in this case. Do you have more info on what the design needs? |
