991.0. "DECconcentrator and ALPHA workstation" by QUIVER::STEFANI (Elvis is my psychic advisor) Thu Jun 10 1993 13:10

Here is a DECconcentrator inquiry that was posted to the Internet. Feel

We've got an DECconcentrator 500 with an ALPHA and an IRIS plugged into
it. The IRIS seems to work fine. The ALPHA stays stuck in blinking
green mode if we plug it into the port card (DEFCN-NA), but it works
if we plug it into the A or B port on the management card it works.
Any ideas?

By the way, the reason I couldn't set anything using the OBM port was
that there's a switch (not documented in the same manual as the document
on the OBM port itself) that disables setting things with the port.
"UNKNOWN ERROR" is a pretty stupid error message for this case.

My local DEC weenie installed a DEFCN here and an FZA card in my ALPHA.
I also plugged in an IRIS to the DEFCN. The DEFCN shows solid green on
the IRIS port and the IRIS seems happy. The port with the ALPHA (yes
I did swap them around) shows blinking green on the DEFCN as well as the
back of the FZA card. Netstat -s confirms that the light is blinking.
Nothing works. Sounds like a broken fiber? Can't swap that as DEC for
some reason put ST's on the back of the FZA and not the FSD's. Anything
else I could possibly be missing.

In the process of screwing around with the DEFCN, I've hooked up a terminal
(well it's a Sparcstation) to the OBM port on the DEFCN. After a half an
hour of screwing around with a breakout box I got it to send and receive
characters. However, not much interesting works when I select it with
the menus. Trying to set the SNMP IP address, or changing the password,
or toggling UPDATE or anything causes an obtuse "UNKNOWN ERROR" message
and nothing actually changes. Any ideas on this one?

I used an AXP 3000-500/DEFZA connected on a DEFCN-N without any
    problem.

If the F.O. cable is not broken, I'll say transmit and receive
fiber are inversed. As DEFZA has ST connectors instead MIC, it's
    very easy be wrong.

I can't trust it is that but it's better to check.

Is the ALPHA running OSF or OpenVMS ?

I have experienced some problems with the drivers supplied with EFT OpenVMS
1.5 not "synching" with other FDDI kit very well. Hopefully this has been
fixed in recent "customer" versions.... :^)

If your ALPHA is making connection via A or B ports then I have to agree
   that -1 sounds most likely.
