968.0. "Hub-based 100/10 bridge?" by VAXRIO::ROLF (Vaporware Design Specialist) Tue May 25 1993 14:35

    Several customers keep asking us for a "hub-based" 100/10 bridge.

    I see up to now no intention for such a product to be made by DEC,
    not even in the DECHUB900 product set.

    In an old note I see a reference to CABLETRON announcing such a
    product late last year. Is this available yet? Do we know of any
    other vender having such a solution?

    In talking with my customers, standard bridges are dead. What everyone
    wants are Brouters. I'm working with two customers right now planning
    on buying separate boxes to provide brouter capabilities for
    their mixed FDDI/Ethernet networks.

    A bridge in a hub is nice but most customers today don't believe
    bridges provide them the control they need. Also, most bridges cost the
    same as a BRouter.

Such a bridge (or rather, as .1 points out, a BRouter) is very definitely
planned, and work is well underway.
