958.0. "When is a DECbridge 500 not a DECbridge 500?" by JEDI::CAUDILL (Kelly - NaC Tech Support - 264-3320) Mon May 17 1993 11:07

We were just about to upgrade our DECbridges to the latest firmware but
I'm confused by the release notes. It says, basically, "The
DECbridge 500 series consists of the DECbridge 510... and does not
    include the DECbridge 500."

    So, a DECbridge 500 is not a DECbridge 500.

    If I have a DEFEB-AA or a DEFEB-AB, what should I do?

Yep, it is confusing. The DECbridge 500 (DEFEB-AA, DEFEB-AB) is the
original bridge product, supporting just two ports, FDDI and Ethernet.
When the 3 port Ethernet board was introduced, they had to redesign the
AP controller board to handle the extra ports. The redesigned AP was
named the AP2. With the AP2 module and an NI1 module, you have a
DECbridge 500 series box; with AP2 and NI3, you have a DECbridge 600
series box. The last two digits of the series number indicate the type
of FI card installed (eg. 520 is single Ethernet module and ANSI DAS
    FI module).

To complicate things a little more, an AP3 module will soon be
available that adds out-of-band management to the list of features. But
the latest software will still operate with either the AP2 or AP3
    modules.

The old DECbridge 500 is essentially obsolete; to use the latest
firmware (with features like SNMP management), you must upgrade to the
500/600 series, which means getting a new AP2 (or AP3) module. See the
Network Buyer's Guide for upgrade info.
