I'm having a problem at a GM site in Flint hooking up a DEFZA-AA in a DECsystem 5000/240 to a Cabletron hub. The problem is that I can't get the DEC BN24D-10 cable bayonet end connectors to hook up to the DEFZA board although they will connect just fine to all the other like-ended fiber equipment in the computer room (three different vendors). Yes, I do know how to hook up FDDI cables. Specifically, the problem seems to be that the dimension from the outside face of the backing plate on the DEFZA board - to the locking pin on the connector tube on the board - is too small to allow the BNC-like locking hub on the cable end to be pushed far enough in toward the board to be rotated and locked in place on the locking pins. On all the other fiber equipment in evidence, this dimension is much larger - which allows the cable to connect properly. The BNC-like hubs on this cable are plastic - the ones I've been used to in the past had metal locking hubs that were much thinner in the required dimension and worked without problem. DECdirect is telling me that they shipped the correct cable. I'm going to try and get the local Field Service folks to provide a cable with metal hubs. However, can anybody shed some light on what's wrong here? Do I have a bad cable, board, or what - or do our DEFZA boards have non-standard dimensions and require special cables? It would be good to get this resolved before someone else runs into it. Thanks.

This has been fixed in a later version of the DEFZA. The connectors that are giving you this problem are probably the ST-2 (or STII) type. These came out on the market after we shipped the DEFZA. We made a modification to it to accept the ST-2 connectors, but it seems that you have an older version. All of the BN24D-xx cables that I have in the lab are terminated with the ST-1 connectors. It might be that the ST-1 connectors have been discontinued, and replaced with the ST-2s. So finding an older cable should address your problem. Thanks very much for your response. The system and controller in question were shipped and installed last month - so it looks like we're still putting the old version out there. I'm glad the problem has been fixed by engineering. However, it would be good to get the word out - nobody I talked to in DECdirect, Sales support, Colorado internal support, or field service knew anything about this. The current field service fix apparently is to bore two holes in the appropriate spot on the system bulkhead to get more clearance. Seems a little drastic to me. |
