Hi, I need an info on FDDI monitor. A customer of ours would like to have a tools to have statistics on FDDI, he's interested in: -FDDI network utilization -Errors -Top talkers -Protocols running on FDDI etc.etc. I suggested him to buy an analyzer like Tekelec, but for for security reasons he doesn't want to buy it. The customer is a University and he doesn't want that any people could read the packets. So I'd like to know if someone perhaps know if exist something like some products that works on Ethernet (I know Watchdog for example), that are able to produce statistics on the network utilization BUT UNABLE to read packets. Thanks in advance for any pointer, Ciao Luciano Barilaro

That reasoning makes no sense, and you'd do the customer a service by explaining that. It takes only about an hour or so of programming to write a program that reads every packet on the network. That's simply a fact of life that goes with being on a LAN. Analyzers make it SLIGHTLY easier but that's all. That said, it's possible to do the things you asked for with an application, and such applications may be around (don't know of any off-hand). But they wouldn't be accurate at high loads, and why spend the effort reinventing the wheel when a perfectly good, easy to use, solution is available off the shelf? (If the issue is lack of money, the best answer is to put some students to work creating the software tool; won't take them long to do something simple...) paul

You can FTP a program for ULTRIX that will every packet off the LAN (either FDDI or Ethernet). It doesn't even take an hour...
