915.0. "Does DECbridge 6XX support RFC 1213?" by GUIDUK::KANG (J.H. John Kang @SEO - DTN 545-4340) Tue Mar 30 1993 14:38

    Hi,

    I would like to ask you more questions on DECbridge 6XX (Note 907).
    The questions are:

    1.  SNMP supporting RFC 1213

        A. Provide for Default Gateway with Subnet masking
        B. Global errors and types - CRCs, Fragments, Collisons, Runts
            & Giants
        C. Utilization must be indicated in bytes
        D. CPU utilization and Buffer usage/overflow
        E.  Timed partition-override
        F. Provide 'get' on all hardware and software
        G.  Interoperability with SunNet Manager

    Does the DECbridge 6XX support the above? In addition, someone metioned
    that SMT 7.2 will be out soon. Do we know when?

    Thanks.

    I can answer some of these:

>>> A. Provide for Default Gateway with Subnet masking

    The following is copied from the SNMP User Guide:

    Default Gateway configuration
    -----------------------------

       The IP stack in these devices does not need to be configured with
    a subnet mask to participate in any IP network configuration. However,
    in the event that a Trap Receiver IP address is specified, and it is
    not on a subnet local to the device, a Default Gateway must be
    configured to allow these traps to be delivered.

       The default gateway may be configured with SNMP SET on either
    esysGatewayAddress [DEC ELAN MIB] or ipRouteTable [MIB-II]. In
    the latter, the destination IP address should be specified as 0.0.0.0,
    and the next hop (ipRouteNextHop) as the IP address of the gateway.
    It may also be configured by using any of the DEC ELMS-conformant
    products mentioned earlier.

       It is not necessary to configure this parameter if the NMS receiving
    traps is on a directly connected subnet, or if the trap address table
    is not configured.

>>> B. Global errors and types - CRCs, Fragments, Collisons, Runts
            & Giants

    I assume you refer to counters for the above events. The bridge does
    maintain these counters.

>>> C. Utilization must be indicated in bytes

    There are counters for total bytes received, total bytes transmitted,
    device bytes received, device bytes transmitted, etc.

>>>        D.  CPU utilization and Buffer usage/overflow

    No.

>>>        E.  Timed partition-override

    Don't know what this is.

>>> F. Provide 'get' on all hardware and software

    Software revision and hardware configuration are available.

>>> G. Interoperability with SunNet Manager

    It has been tested with SunNet Manager at the University of New
    Hampshire Interoperability Lab, with no compatibility problems.

>>> Does the DECbridge 6XX support the above? In addition, someone metioned
>>> that SMT 7.2 will be out soon. Do we know when?

    V1.3 of the DECbridge firmware supports SMT 7.2. It is scheduled to be
    released by SSB on 20-Apr. A pointer to the V1.3 image is in Note
    837.1; read the notice in 837.2.

915.2Override auto-partitionGUIDUK::KANGJ.H. John Kang @SEO - DTN 545-4340Wed Mar 31 1993 15:5712
    Thanks Dave for your quick response.

    Regarding "E) Timed partition-override" question, it is meant that

    		 "Overriding auto-partition"

    Can we do this?

    Thanks again.

915.3partition?QUIVER::WALTERWed Mar 31 1993 18:005
    Sorry, but I have no idea what a "partition" is in the context of a
    bridge, or why you would override it.

    Dave

915.4Yes, you can manually partition the LANMUDDY::WATERSWed Mar 31 1993 18:163
    No doubt they mean "manually control the spanning tree topology".
    The answer is yes. You can set the standard bridge parameters such
    as port cost and port enablement to affect the spanning tree.
