889.0. "Basic FDDI configuration question" by TOOHOT::LEEDS (From VAXinated to Alphaholic) Fri Mar 05 1993 13:39

Okay - here's your basic "stupid" question. We have no-one left
locally who understands how to configure networks, let alone FDDI. We
have a customer who currently has a 7 node VAXcluster (comprised of a
VAX 9000, a VAX 7000, and 5 VAX 6000s). They are currently all
connected via Ethernet and CI. They want to replace the Ethernet with
Fiber.

Other than the controllers for the XMI to FDDI for each VAX, (DEMFA),
what else do they need ?? We can't seem to make heads of tails out of
the variety of options for concentrators and other FDDI components.

They still need the VAXcluster to be able to connect to the rest of
their Ethernet backbone which has about 1000 other nodes (VAX, SUN,
HP, etc) on various segments via routers, bridges, etc.

Basically, we want the CI cluster to use FDDI for network
communication between CI cluster nodes, and still be able to get to a
traditional EtherHose for other communication.

Thanks for any help.

Arlan,

When you have questions of this nature, call your local support center, we'll be
glad to help you! 800-525-7104.

There are a few ways your network can be configured. If you want it easy:

                             --------------
                            | DEFCN |
                             --------------
                             / | | \
                            / | | \
                         9000 7000 6000 DEFEB
                                               |
                                               |
                                          +---------+

You can connect your vaxens/DEFEB (bridge) with multi-mode fiber (hi or low
power, depending on your distance)to the DEFCN (concentrator). You can make the
DEFEB a SAS (single attach station). If you want an actual ring with a DAS
concentrator and a DAS bridge, then it's a little change, but not much.
Give us a call, we'll help you.
