| That's up to the host; the adapter simply does what it's told by the driver.

| Generally the SNMP attributes are manageable on the FDDI adapters. In some
cases the management is done via DEC LMA (Local Management Application or
"Larry's Management Application" as Larry Stefani likes to call it). VMS and
ULTRIX (and probably OSF/1) provide a common agent which makes it easier for
drivers to make the adapter SNMP managable. As other operating systems
(NOVELL, SCO, Windows NT, DOS, OS2, ETC) provide similiar capability, remote
SNMP management will probably be added.

| Thanks for the input !
Just more background information:
This customer has (will have) several FDDI rings, that are connected via WAN
leased lines (Cisco Router). The Ciscos are attached to enet, not FDDI.
Their requirement is to manager DECbridge, WC, FDDI adaptor from a central
DECmcc, not allowing any nonroutable protocols a la RBMS, MOP.
Therefore probably SNMP as the remaining solution ?
Cheers
Walter.

| Just for curiosity, under what operating systems are these adapters
going to be running? SNMP support will come to different operation
systems as different times.

| [quick rebuttal to .2]
I have never initiated or promoted the use of "Larry's Management
Application" as a name for the local management program that we
currently ship with our DEC FDDIcontroller/EISA product. I am guilty
of suggesting that it become a shareware product with contributions to be
made at the home of a certain software engineer who worked on the project,
but I was quickly reminded of the illegality and "unethicalness" of such
an act. ;-)
As it stands, I'll be looking for a better product name soon. "Local"
networking software is not something that we should be embracing here
in the networking groups.
