878.0. "FDDI on multimode, urgent" by HGOVC::LEUNGWINGKIN () Fri Feb 26 1993 22:21

    Is there any FDDI product in Digital supporting multimode fiber of 6Km
    in length? We have a customer who has already installed multimode
    fiber and will like to run FDDI on it.

    At least two vendors claiming that they have the products? Are they
    using proprietary solution?

    Any alternate solution? T3/E3 solution is workable but it is not what
    our customer wants.

    Thanks in advance

    The short answer is no. The multimode PMD specifies 2 km as the maximum
    distance between stations, so any vendor claim to the contrary is not
    consistent with the PMD.

    Having said that does not mean a particular 6 km link won't work. Using
    a high-bandwidth fiber and LEDs with lots of margin, a 6 km mm link
    would work. But it's not a repeatable, or supportable, configuration.
