873.0. "FDDI support for SMP (Station Mgmt Prot.)?" by TENNIS::KAM (Kam USDS (714)261-4133 (DTN 535) IVO) Wed Feb 24 1993 17:27

    1) Does the DEC FDDI implementation have built-in hardware support
       for SMP? Does the hardware do the SMP or does the driver.

    2) Is the SMP layer "VISIBLE" to the device driver, with respect to
       OpenVMS and OSF/1.

873.1OpenVMS (AXP and VAX)STAR::GAGNEDavid Gagne - VMS/LAN DevelopmentWed Feb 24 1993 17:449
    There are portions of SMT that are handled by the device. The OpenVMS
    drivers do not handle any portion of SMT. The FDDI network management
    module for OpenVMS VAX (for Phase V) will send certain SMT packets
    through the DEMFA driver and the DEMFA driver will give the responses
    to the FDDI network management module.

    In the future, OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS AXP will enhance the QIO
    interface to the FDDI drivers to allow a user (application) to start
    an SMT channel and to transmit and receive SMT packets.

The required parts of SMT are implemented in the device.

873.3"SMT", not "SMP"JEREMY::MAURENEMaurene Fritz, JerusalemThu Feb 25 1993 01:456
    Just to clarify, the ANSI FDDI Station Management protocol is known
    as "SMT".

    SMP and SNMP are acronyms that exist, but refer to other things.
