There are two parts to this answer. The first is that DEC's Thinwire is only compatible with DEC. The STP interface is compatible with anything that implements the "Gang of Five" specification. Note this is not the "SDDI" specification supported by IBM. I don't have a current list of vendors supporting that spec which, of course, is what you really need. Bill
851.2 | STP standard = ThinWire? | ISKATE::BILLD | Mon Aug 09 1993 17:29 | 5
Does the STP standard apply to ThinWire, as was emplied in the previous reply? Bill D.
851.3 | STP,Gang 'o Five, Thinwire != standard-based | LEVERS::MELARAGNI | Mon Aug 09 1993 20:22 | 13
No, absolutely not. Both the Gang of Five, STP, and Thinwire implementations are PROPRIETARY in that no standard exists that supports any of them. I've heard tell that IBM is (was) trying to create an ANSI-based standard for their STP stuff, but it think that has all but died in the face of TP-PMD. Gang of Five and STP are quite similar but have some subtle differences. Thinwire is completely different that any other media implementation (it uses only one cable for bidirectional communication using echo cancelation). As far as i know DEC is the only producer of a Thinwire PMD. bill

For a final question: Is there a standard being worked on for a ThinWire implementation as there is for UTP and STP? Bill
