806.0. "ring init, or beaconing problem" by GIDDAY::SMALL (Life is too short to be small) Wed Dec 02 1992 23:52

Hi all,

I a have a customer who has an FDDI ring with a number of DECstation 5000's.
The DECstations have no problems communicating with each other, but receive an
FDDI ring init approx every minute.

All nodes are connected to a DECconcentrator 500, and from there to a
DECbridge 500. They have no problems communication across the DECbridge to
other nodes in their WAN.

fza0: Unsolicited Event -> and Ring Init Received messages are being logged to
the errorlogger; the errorlog is taking up more space than usual.

What problems might cause this behavior? How do I troubleshoot this further?

Regards

In my experiance, a cable fault somewhere in the ring causes ring init. If MIC
connector has attenuation or bending of fiber exsist in somewhere in the ring,
 ring starts init occationally.
Have you check PHY port counters on all of Physical ports?
If you can find LEM Reject or LEM error on one of those ports, the problem is
in there.
You can see those counters with elms ot DECmcc/ELM. \
eg. ELMS>SHOW some_station PHYSICAL PORT port# COUNTER. If you have other
vendor station on the ring, you can use SIF command as
ELMS>SHOW SIF OPERATION VIA your concentrator.
Alarm capability is very useful for such problem. Try START ALARM TERMINAL
under elms. The alarm will tell you what is happning on the ring.
