| | When using the ELM FM to draw the ring map, must the SMT gateway be
| necessarily be a Digital DECconcentrator or DECbridge 5xx, 6xx.
Yes.
| What is so special abt our SMT gateways?
[If I'm wrong on any of this, I'm sure someone will correct me.]
They are special in that we can make money selling them. The
management software is not priced to make lots of money on its own,
it's priced to help sell hardware.
There was also another techincal issue of some importance, I think it
was knowing the address of at least one FDDI station on the ring that
fully implements SMT functions using a known management protocol (like
SNMP or RBMS). We went with RBMS and Digital DEFEB or DEFCN because we
knew for certain that those device would be able to get all the station
information to build the logical and physical ring maps. The software
on another vendor's device might not fully implement the FDDI MIB.
| I have a customer who has a large FDDI ring, abt 100 nodes, but does
| not have any Digital FDDI products.
| He likes DECmcc and ELM, can he use it to map out his ring.
Sounds like you might be able to sell at least one DEFCN or DEFEB. :-)
